ROCK HILL, S.C. – Junior forward
Elias Khodri posted his sixth goal of the season in the 27
th minute while the Gardner-Webb University men's soccer team posted another clean sheet in a 1-0 win at Winthrop on Tuesday evening. The Runnin' Bulldogs improved to 6-2-1 overall and 2-0 within the Big South Conference.
Graduate forward
Lucas Mauro led the way for GWU, compiling a game-high four shots while three others added two shots each. Junior keeper
Alan Horrocks earned the win after denying the Eagles of a score over 90 minutes.
The Runnin' Bulldogs established dominance on the offensive end early in the contest, earning a series of corner kicks over the match's initial seven minutes, but were unable to put anything into the back of the net.
The first real opportunity of the contest for either side also proved to be the first score for Gardner-Webb. Khodri collected the ball in the box and calmly fired the rock past the Winthrop keeper towards bottom center, giving the visitors a 1-nil lead.
Gardner-Webb continued to apply pressure to the Eagles' defense as the Black and Red posted several shots on goal. However, Andres Manzano Garcia came up clutch with three saves before the half, sending the game into the break with the score still at 1-0 in favor of GWU.
The second half was more of a stalemate early on before Winthrop's Borris Nguelle looked poised to knot the contest at one score apiece, but Horrocks came up with one of his two saves on the evening, preserving the advantage for the 'Dawgs.
From that point the game was all academic as Gardner-Webb was able to milk the clock while keeping the Eagles off the board enroute to the 1-0 win.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will be back in action on Saturday, October 12 as they host the Blue Hose of Presbyterian at Greene-Harbison Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
