Anthony Selden also reached double-digits with 10 points on the night. Richards controlled the glass, pulling down a game-high 14 boards.
Pitt scored the first four points of the game before Simmons connected on a driving layup to put the Runnin' Bulldogs on the board. However, the Panthers went on a quick 10-0 run to extend the lead to 14-2 with 15:07 remaining in the opening half.
Gardner-Webb remained within striking distance following a layup from graduate forward
Jamaine Mann, trimming the deficit to 21-13, but Pitt continued to apply pressure this time with a run of 13 straight, ballooning the advantage to its biggest of the half, 34-13.
A make from behind the arc by Selden sparked a mini 10-4 run by GWU, allowing the Runnin' Bulldogs to head to the locker room trailing only 38-23.
The second half started as a back-and-forth affair before a layup from Simmons and tough rebound and put back by redshirt-senior forward
Isaiah Richards capped a 6-0 run, pulling GWU to within 48-35 heading to the under-16 media timeout.
An old-fashioned three-point play from Selden brought the Runnin' Bulldogs as close as they had been, 55-44, since early in the first half of play. However, Pitt took back control of the game with 16 of the next 19 points while extending the lead out to 71-47 with just over five minutes to play.
From that point, the game was all academic as Gardner-Webb eventually fell to the Panthers 83-64.
