BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb University softball continued play in the Runnin' Bulldog Classic on Saturday earning a 3-2 win over the University of Delaware before falling to Youngstown State University 3-1.
Game one saw Gardner-Webb fall behind in the top of the first inning as the Blue Hens doubled to bring home a pair to start. These were the only earned runs GWU's
Elle Doolittle gave up in the ballgame as she went on to pitch a complete game. Gardner-Webb utilized her great work in the circle and solid defense to hold UD to just the two runs going into the fifth inning.
Jailyn Tineo singled in the bottom of the inning to score
Haley Yeary and
Taylor Dreher tying the game. Dreher went on to double in the sixth inning to bring in
Adrienne Visintine scoring the go ahead run. Doolittle shut down Delaware in the seventh to earn the 3-2 win.
Game two was a meeting of the only two unbeaten teams of the weekend up until then. Youngstown State took the lead in the first frame on a SAC fly. Tineo continued her great day at the plate doubling in the third to bring in
Kayleigh Nicholson tying the game. The Penguins took advantage of small ball in the fifth inning getting one across, and then a second due to the hitting of Hailey Niederkohr. YSU took the close contest 3-1. Tineo leads the 'Dawgs with five RBI's and an average of .385 in the first four ballgames of the season.
