BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb University baseball team finished their three game homestand on Sunday afternoon falling to Canisius College by a final score of 8-5. Gardner-Webb battled back in the late innings coming up three runs short.
The Golden Griffins made it difficult early on for the Runnin' Bulldogs putting up five runs in the first half inning. GWU's only run until the ninth was a solo shot by
Tommy Tavarez in the fourth inning making it 5-1. Canisius held an 8-1 lead entering the bottom of the ninth. Tavarez got the scoring going grounding out but scoring
Joe Stanzione in the process.
Peter Capobianco scored on a wild pitch, before
Matt Ilgenfritz singled to score
Humberto Torres. Gardner-Webb's final run came from
Wade Kelly who singled to score
Max Smyley. The final score was 8-5 with the Griffins hanging on.
The Runnin' Bulldogs return to the field on Tuesday Feb. 28 at the University of South Carolina for a 4:00 p.m. scheduled first pitch.
