BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb University softball team split on the final they of the Red & Black Classic falling to Marist College 6-2 before turning around to defeat Hampton University 8-0 in six innings via run-rule. The Runnin' Bulldogs ultimately went 3-3 at home on the weekend.
"The big takeaway from the weekend is we need to be consistent if we want to be playing in the post season.", said coach Wigness. "We were inconsistent in every aspect this weekend and it showed in the results. There were a lot of bright spots. The defense had some really great plays and got out of some tough situations. We also had some mental lapses that led to runs on the board for the opposing team. Offensively we hit the ball hard but we weren't efficient enough in the games we lost. The pitchers threw well but I know we can be sharper. I liked the response the last game, something to build on moving into this week. The end goal is winning the Big South, if we can learn from this weekend and learn to play more consistently before then we will be a very tough team to beat."
The first game saw Marist take an early one-run lead in the first frame.
Maura Pendleton brought home
Taylor Dreher on an RBI single in the bottom of the second to tie it 1-1. The Red Foxes regained the lead by a run in the third before stringing together three RBI's in the top of the fifth. Marist tallied one more in the seventh with GWU's
Adrienne Visintine driving home
Jailyn Tineo in the bottom frame resulting in the 6-2 final.
The second game of the day against Hampton remained scoreless through the first three innings. Gardner-Webb got on the board in the fourth when Visintine hit a towering homerun to rightfield. The 'Dawgs put up four more in the fifth frame with Carmen McRea, Visintine and
Andrea Lyon picking up RBI's. GWU put away the Pirates in the bottom of the sixth inning as Pendleton tripled bringing in two, and McRea bringing home Pendleton via a bunt single to win 8-0.
The Runnin' Bulldogs return to the field on Wednesday, Feb. 28 on the road at Western Carolina University at 4:00 p.m.
