BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb women's lacrosse team (0-4) fell to unbeaten George Mason University (5-0), 19-11, on Sunday afternoon at Spangler Stadium.
After the Patriots jumped out to a 7-1 lead early in the second quarter, the Runnin' Bulldogs responded with three goals in a row and five of the next seven to tighten the score before halftime.
With 13:52 remaining in the second quarter,
Alera Cornett scored an unassisted goal to make it 7-3.
Rebecca Ferrina followed with back-to-back unassisted goals to cut the deficit to two goals, 7-5.
Mackenzie Gallery capped Gardner-Webb's second-quarter push on an unassisted goal with :21 seconds left until the break. George Mason led 9-7 at halftime.
After a back-and-forth third quarter, the Patriots scored six consecutive times to open the fourth quarter and pull away.
George Mason was led by Shannon Tuozzo, who scored six times. Cornett, Ferrina,
Brittany Sherrod,
Aimie Perino, and
Taylor Tobin each scored twice for Gardner-Webb.
Emma Anderson made 11 saves for the 'Dawgs, playing the entire game in the net.
For the game, George Mason out shot Gardner-Webb 39-24, led in draw controls 20-13, and led in ground balls 21-15.
The women's lacrosse team returns to action on Saturday, March 2, at Jacksonville University. Opening draw is scheduled for 3 p.m.
