ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Gardner-Webb University women's lacrosse was bested in their Wednesday afternoon Big South opener to Winthrop University by a final score of 13-8. The Runnin' Bullogs tallied five second half goals ultimately coming up short against the Eagles.
The 'Dawgs kept pace as Winthrop tallied three early goals.
Aimie Perino scored first for GWU before the Eagles tallied their fourth.
Emma Duchscherer answered with a goal to make 4-2. She would score her second early in the second quarter in response to another Winthrop goal.
Winthrop built a 9-3 lead before
Jamie Weber and
Taylor Tobin put up a pair for Gardner-Webb in the third quarter. With Winthrop leading 10-5 to start the fourth, Tobin tallied her second of the game.
Alera Cornett scored with 10:19 remaining and Tobin scored her third with 8:39 left. Winthrop scored a trio of fourth quarter goals to hang on for the 13-8 win.
The Runnin' Bulldogs return to Spangler Stadium on Saturday, March 30 to host Furman University at 1:00 p.m.
