Runnin' Bulldogs return home to WebbTennis Center after a month on the road

Boiling Springs, N.C.---- For the first time in over a month, the Gardner-Webb men's tennis team returned to the Webb Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon and dominated the visiting University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, 7-0.

It was just the second home of the spring for the Runnin' Bulldogs who improved to 10-2 on the season. Chattanooga, who plays in the Southern Conference, falls to 6-7.

In the double's competition, the 'Dawgs No.1 tandem of senior Eduardo Dias (Parana, Brazil) and senior Chrisjan Van Wyk (Pretoria, South Africa) got things rolling in doubles with a victory over Jakup Jupa and Peyton Gatti 6-3.

Numa Lemieux-Monette (Montreal, Canada) and freshman Jurie Terblanche (Perth, Australia) won 7-5 at No.2 doubles over the Mocs duo of Cortland Grove and Jordan McClure.

The No.3 doubles match did not finish as the 'Dawgs held a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.

In the singles competition, Gardner-Webb won on courts two, four and six to secure the match.

Junior Alex Lepine (Montreal, Canada) took the singles No.2 match in dominating fashion, 6-2, 6-0, over Jupa.

On Court No.4, junior Kim Niethammer (Harrenburg, Germany), the reigning Big South Player of the Week, prevailed 6-3, 6-4 over Grove.

The match clincher was on Court No.6 as Terblanche won in three sets 4-6, 6-1,6-1 against Gatti.

Gardner-Webb swept the other three singles matches to post a perfect afternoon.

Dias took the No.1 singles match (7-6 (11), 6-1).

Lemieux-Monette continued the 'Dawgs dominance in the single competition by taking the No.3 spot 6-4, 6-7 (8), 6-3 and Chrisjan Van Wyk won on Court No. 5 (7-6 (7), 5-7, 10-7).

"We played a well-coached Chattanooga team, but right now we're firing on all cylinders," said Gardner-Webb assistant tennis coach Sebastion Harris, who is in hist first year on the Gardner-Webb coaching staff following a five-season playing career with the Runnin' Bulldogs. "We're excited to have two tough matches ahead of us this week."

Up Next—Gardner -Webb will be in action again on Monday (3/4) when the "Dawgs host Fairfield at the Webb Tennis Center in a 3PM match. The Runnin' Bulldogs will play their third home match in as many days when they entertain Wofford on Tuesday (3/5) at 2:30PM.
