CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Gardner-Webb University baseball team fell to Charleston Southern University on Friday night by a final score of 7-5. It was the first of three-games the Runnin' Bulldogs will play against the Buccaneers this weekend.
Following an early CSU 1-0 lead, Gardner-Webb took a brief 2-1 lead in the second with
Tommy Tavarez and
Peter Capobianco reaching home on an error at second base. Charleston Southern retook the lead in the bottom frame getting four across on three hits and a sac fly.
The 'Dawgs cut into the lead in the third with
Humberto Torres homering to also score
Alec Burns. CSU tallied a pair of insurance runs in the sixth inning. GWU got one back in the eighth inning ultimately falling short of tying up the game.
Gardner-Webb will continue their series at Charleston Southern on Saturday, April 13. First pitch for game two is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
