BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb University softball team earned a sweep of their home doubleheader against Western Carolina University. GWU did so on two walk offs winning game one 1-0, and game two 4-3.
Game one was a pitcher's duel between
Andrea Lyon and WCU's Tessa Juett. Lyon pitched a complete game shut-out going all seven innings and registering six strikeouts. The Runnin' Bulldogs walked it off 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh as pinch runner
Haley Yeary reached home on a throwing error from third base on a GWU triple steal attempt.
The 'Dawgs took an early 2-0 lead the third inning of game two on a single from
Adrienne Visintine bringing home
Jailyn Tineo. A home run and a throwing error in the fifth inning allowed the Catamounts to take a 3-2 lead. Gardner-Webb battled back in the sixth with
Bella Ligotti singling, and Yeary reaching home on a throwing error to tie the game. Down to two outs in the seventh, Elle Christopher tripled to right center bringing home Vistintine on another walk off.
"This team will never quit.", said coach Wigness. "We haven't played in a while coming off our bye week so I thought we were a little rusty offensively. But we ran the bases very well and had the timely hits. A couple defensive miscues, but overall, I was really pleased. We got out of some tough spots and really mitigated damage. We simply executed things we work on every day at practice. Pitchers threw really well today. Good momentum going into our series at Upstate this weekend.
Gardner-Webb will return to the field for a three-game series on the road at the University of South Carolina Upstate starting on Friday, April 19 at 4:00 p.m.
