JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Gardner-Webb University softball team split a doubleheader at East Tennessee State University on Tuesday afternoon. The Runnin' Bulldogs took the first game in six innings by a final score of 11-2. ETSU took game two in extras by a final of 5-4.
The Runnin' Bulldogs had the bats going early in game one putting up a five spot in the second inning.
Taylor Dreher doubled scoring one, and
Kayleigh Nicholson and
Jailyn Tineo both hit two-run bombs. Gardner-Webb tallied three more in the third with a single and two hit batters with loaded bases. Despite ETSU getting a pair across in the third inning,
Annicka McLaughlin singled in the fifth to score one, and
Emily Garcia singled to bring a pair home in the sixth ending the game via run rule 11-2.
Ella Christopher homered in the second to get the 'Dawgs on the board first in game two. After ETSU tied it in the third, the game remained 1-1 until the sixth inning.
Bella Ligotti hit a two-run homer in the sixth briefly giving GWU the lead. The Buccaneers went on tie it at three in the bottom frame ultimately sending the game into extras. GWU took a 4-3 lead in the top of the ninth inning on a sacrifice fly. This set the stage for ETSU to get a pair across on two singles to win the game 5-4 walking it off.
Gardner-Webb will return to the field on Saturday, April 6 for the start a three-game series at Radford University starting with a double-header at 2:00 p.m.
