BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb University baseball dropped the final game of their Big South series against High Point University on Saturday by a final score of 13-11. The Runnin' Bulldogs scored nine runs in the final three innings falling just shy of HPU.
High Point got things started putting up one in the first and three more in the second to take a 4-0 lead.
Gardner-Webb was able to cut that lead in half in the bottom of the second with
Mark Black doubling to score
Humberto Torres.
Peter Capobianco then singled bringing home Black to make it 4-2.
The Panthers put up a seven spot in the top of the third inning to take an 11-2 lead.
Trailing by nine runs in the seventh inning, the Runnin' Bulldogs began a rally as Capobianco homered to right center.
Matt Ilgenfritz then homered to left field scoring three making the score 11-6.
HPU answered with a solo shot in the eighth inning making it 12-6.
The 'Dawgs put up five in the eighth inning starting with
Ryan Kennell singling to score
Joe Stanzione.
Ethan Liao was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded scoring
Lawson Knight.
Humberto Torres then doubled to score Kennell and
Max Smyley making it a 12-11 ballgame.
High Point tallied their final run via a home run in the ninth. Matt Little got the win, and
Reid Bertram the loss.
Following the game the outgoing seniors of the GWU baseball program including
Luke Carpenter,
Kazuya Kojima,
CJ Czerwinski,
JT Inskeep,
Max Smyley,
Mark Black,
Humberto Torres,
Peter Capobianco, and
Alec Burns were recognized.
