BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Senior
Livi Tanzer posted a pair of goals while the Gardner-Webb women's soccer team used a stingy defense to take home its first win of the season, a 2-0 defeat of Converse University on Sunday evening inside Greene-Harbison Stadium.
The Runnin' Bulldogs put pressure on the Valkyrie defense early and often in the opening 45, but were unable to change the scoreboard over the initial 13 minutes of action.
However, the consistent play in the offensive zone paid dividends at the 12:55 mark as Tanzer was awarded a penalty kick following a hard foul in the box, giving the Black and Red a 1-0 lead.
That advantage doubled in the 23
rd minute when
Camila Lezcano found Tanzer streaking in front of cage for her second score of the contest.
That proved to be more than enough as the Gardner-Webb defense, behind excellent goalie play from
Stephanie Liu, shut down Converse while escaping with a 2-0 win.
The Runnin' Bulldogs resume play on Wednesday, August 28 as they welcome The Citadel to campus. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
