BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb University women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw with The Citadel on Wednesday evening inside Greene-Harbison Stadium. Senior forward
Julianna Jatkola notched her first score of the season for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
The Citadel pushed GWU on its heels early in the contest, but the Black and Red defense held strong while not allowing the visitors to jump ahead on the scoreboard. Sophomore keeper
Stephanie Liu came up big in the 19
th minute with a key save to preserve the tie.
After battling for 44 minutes, the Bulldogs of The Citadel were presented a golden opportunity as a foul in the box gave the visitors a penalty kick. Elisa Fuentes connected on the freebie, sending the Runnin' Bulldogs into halftime trailing 1-0.
Gardner-Webb came out with new energy in the second half, garnering the game-tying goal in the 53
rd minute of action. Jatkola was able to put home a header following a free kick by
Lea Gossett that was pushed against the crossbar by The Citadel goalkeeper.
From that point, the game became a back-and-forth affair as the two teams looked to push ahead late. GWU was poised to do just that in the 80
th minute, but
Camila Lezcano's strike was hauled in by Zoe Santos.
That would prove to be the last real opportunity by either side as time expired with the score deadlocked at 1-all.
Gardner-Webb will return to action on Sunday, September 1, traveling to Davidson for non-conference action. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
