HUNTINGTON, WEST VIRGINIA - The Gardner-Webb University men's soccer team took to the road on Tuesday, dropping a close contest with No. 6 ranked Marshall. The Thundering Herd used a goal each side of halftime to down the Runnun' Bulldogs.
The game was largely competitive, with the two sides who are both ranked in their respective regions, finishing with a near even number of chances overall. Across the 90 minutes, Marshall held just an 11-8 edge in total shots, 5-3 in shots on goal. The difference for the home side would come in taking a rather slim amount of chances, with Marshall finding the back of the net in the 43rd and 70th minutes respectively.
The Runnin' Bulldogs saw maybe the two best chances for the Red and Black all night in the first half, with the Marshall keeper having to spring into action in the 27th minute as junior forward Elias Khodri smashed a shot off the post and sophomore midfielder Tiago Campos sent the rebound off target. Gardner-Webb continued to push on, including a narrow offisde call just before the hosts went in front.
GWU managed only three shots in the second half with two of them being dangerous chances while still down just a goal. In the 54th minute, junior forward Jaylen Orr saw a chance saved on frame, ahead of sophomore midfielder Gael Zackrisson who saw his effort go wide in the 62th minute.
Marshall would grab a second goal with just 20 minutes to play, ending the Runnin' Bulldogs chance at another major upset and after a valiant effort on the road.
