Cross Country Opens 2024 Season at Furman Invitational

GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Gardner-Webb University men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2024 season at the Furman Invitational on Saturday morning, with the men's team placing ninth overall while the women's team took eighth.
Women's 6k
In the women's event, junior Jessica Perriello was the class of the field for the Runnin' Bulldogs, crossing the line in 29th place overall with a time of 22:47. She was followed by graduate Jennifer Escalara who completed her race in 25:40, then by freshman Brooke Hope who was just behind with a time of 26:00 in her GWU debut.
Next for Gardner-Webb was freshman Emily Letherman in 26:24, sophomore Evelyn Gordon with a time of 27:13 and senior Teryn Bour who crossed the line in 27:46 for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Men's 6k
In the men's event, sophomore Nathan Cremin led the way for the Runnin' Bulldogs, completing his race in a time of 20:28. Senior Ryan Morita crossed not long after, making his way across the line after 21:03. He was then followed by freshman Michael Fletcher in his GWU debut at 21:18, sophomore Kaden Platt in 21:53 and senior Mark Melton in 22:07.
As for the rest of the Gardner-Webb team, freshman Gabe Morrison, sophomore Austin DeGeorge and freshman Cade Bright finished back to back to back with times of 22:31, 22:33 and 22:34 respectively. That trio was then followed up by junior John Marsh with a time of 26:22 and freshman Luke York at 27:55
Records
Several GWU athletes set either personal best or school record marks on Saturday morning. Among those include Perriello, who's PR by an entire 1:57 places her third all-time in Gardner-Webb history for the 6k event.
Personal records for the men's event include Cremein, who bested his previous record time by 44 seconds, Platt who was 1:25 ahead of his best previous pace, Melton who eclipsed his previous best by two seconds, and DeGeorge who ran 1:02 ahead of his best past mark for the 6k
Meanwhile in the women's event, two more personal records were shattered with Escalara ahead of her best time by 1:29 and Bour some 2:26 ahead of her previous lifetime PR.
