Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Hughes Scores in the 69th Minute to Lead Gardner-Webb Men's Soccer Over Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. – The Gardner-Webb men's soccer team continued its brilliant start to the season, coming away with a 1-0 win at Coastal Carolina on Saturday evening at the CCU Soccer Complex. GWU runs its record to 4-1-1 on the year.

"I'm delighted to drive and to make it a day trip," said head coach Scott Wells. "Four and a half hours on a bus and to come out and compete like that and to be patient while sticking to our identity, not swaying from the gameplan makes me well-pleased. I am excited for the win and obviously for Caio. This is another step forward for the program and step forward in our season as we now focus on conference coming up against Radford."

Offense was at a premium early in the contest as the first true scoring opportunity for either side came in the 23rd minute as CCU's Evan Howard put a shot on goal, but keeper Alan Horrocks kept the Chants off the board with a save.

Gardner-Webb started to push Coastal back on its heels just minutes later as back-to-back shots from Philip Nicoletti and Jaylen Orr were on target but could not find the back of the net as the game went into the break knotted at 0-0.

Horrocks came up with saves in the 49th and 65th minutes before Caio Hughes finally broke the scoreless tie with his second goal of the season coming in the 69th minute. From that point the game was all academic as the Runnin' Bulldogs' defense was stellar while Horrocks picked up two more saves down the stretch in the 1-0 win for Gardner-Webb.

The Runnin' Bulldogs will return to action on Saturday, September 21, facing off against Radford in the Big South opener at Greene-Harbsion Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
