DELAND, Fla. – The Gardner-Webb (0-1) men's tennis team dropped a heartbreaker at Stetson by the final score of 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.
The Runnin' Bulldogs dropped all doubles matches but were able to bounce back in singles competition, picking up three wins at No. 1, No. 3, and No.4.
After Stetson picked up the first point in singles action with a win at No. 2, senior Kim Niethammer started the scoring for the 'Dawgs, taking down Ervin Haris Eminefendic in straight sets during the No. 3 flight (6-4, 6-1). Graduate Eduardo Dias followed that up with a hard-fought win in No. 1 singles over Eder Blanco (6-3, 3-6, 6-2).
However, the Hatters secured the win with back-to-back victories at No. 5 and No. 6. Playing in his first collegiate match, freshman Alexandre Bergeron picked up a win (6-4, 5-7, 6-4) at No. 6 singles.
"Stetson played better at crucial times but I am very proud of our efforts," said head coach Mike Griffith.
Gardner-Webb will return to action on Monday, January 27, remaining in the Sunshine State and traveling to Jacksonville for a date with North Florida. First serve is slated for 11 a.m.
