Dawgs Set to Take on USC Upstate in Pivotal Big South Clash

SPARTANBURG, S.C. –The Gardner-Webb (10-1-2, 3-0-1) men's soccer team is set to return to action on Saturday, October 18, traveling to nearby Spartanburg to take on the USC Upstate Spartans in a Big South showdown.

This contest marks the 17th all-time meeting between the Runnin' Bulldogs and Spartans with the series in favor of Gardner-Webb, 9-6-2. Gardner-Webb took a 4-nil win in last year's encounter at Greene-Harbison Stadium.

Gardner-Webb is coming off a 0-0 tie at Radford on Saturday, October 11. The Dawgs were presented a plethora of opportunities during the contest but could not push ball past the Radford keeper.

Jaylen Orr and Robbie Lyons lead the Runnin' Bulldogs with five goals while Lyons has added a team-high four assists on the season. Teammate Breno Correia has also chipped in four helpers. Samson Kpardeh and Javan Ochieng have scored four goals as GWU is outscoring their opponents 26-7 through 13 games. Alan Horrocks has played all 1,170 minutes in goal, producing nine clean sheets and 30 saves.

Upstate is coming into the contest with a 4-8-1 overall record and 2-2 mark in league play. Without a win in their last four matches, the Spartans last tasted victory on September 27 with a 3-0 decision at Winthrop.

The Spartans are led by Oskar Kaufmann, who has a team-high four goals while adding an assist. Vitalis Takawira, Lucas Bergfors, and Oscar Kelly have three goals each. Takawira leads Upstate with four assists. For the year, the Spartans are being outscored 25-18. Jarrett Wuerslin has played 1,125 minutes in goal for Upstate, collecting 51 saves and two shutouts.
