BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – In a much-anticipated rematch of last year's Big South Conference Tournament Championship, the Gardner-Webb (11-1-2, 4-0-1) men's soccer team is set to return to action on Saturday, October 25, playing host to High Point (9-1-3), with the winner paving its way to the conference regular season title.
This contest marks the 26th all-time meeting between the Runnin' Bulldogs and Panthers with the series in favor of High Point, 15-4-6. However, the Dawgs took down HPU on a pair of occasions last season, including a thrilling 2-1 win at High Point in the championship match.
Gardner-Webb is coming off a 2-1 win at USC Upstate on Saturday, October 18. After falling behind 26 seconds into the contest, GWU bounced back with goals from Samson Kpardeh and Franco Ocana to secure three points in the standings.
Kpardeh joins Jaylen Orr and Robbie Lyons to lead the Runnin' Bulldogs with five goals while Lyons has added a team-high four assists on the season. Teammate Breno Correia has also chipped in four helpers. Javan Ochieng has scored four goals as GWU is outscoring their opponents 28-8 through 14 games. Alan Horrocks has played all 1,260 minutes in goal, producing nine clean sheets and 35 saves.
High Point is coming into the contest with a 9-1-3 overall record and perfect 5-0 mark in league play. The Panthers have collected wins in their previous two contests while last tasting defeat on October 8 at No. 23 UNC Greensboro (2-0).
The Panthers are led by Daniel Lugo, who has a team-high eight goals while adding three assists. Prosper Adagani is second on the club with six goals to go along one helper. Celestin Blondel leads High Point with five assists. For the year, the Panthers are outscoring their opponents by a margin of 28-10. Josh Caron has played all 1,170 minutes in goal for High Point, collecting 43 saves and six shutouts.
