RADFORD, Va. – The No. 23 Gardner-Webb (10-1-1, 3-0) men's soccer team is set to return to action on Saturday, October 11, traveling to Virginia to take on the Radford Highlanders in a Big South showdown.
This contest marks the 23rd all-time meeting between the Runnin' Bulldogs and Highlanders with the series in favor of Radford, 12-8-2. Gardner-Webb has won two straight in the series after picking up a 3-0 win in 2023 followed by a 2-1 victory last year in Boiling Springs.
Gardner-Webb is coming off a 2-1 win over Wofford on Tuesday, October 7. The Dawgs received one goal in each half from Felipe Moreira and Samson Kpardeh, respectively, while riding a stellar defense to their second consecutive season of 10-plus wins, the first time in program history since joining the Division I ranks in 2002.
Jaylen Orr and Robbie Lyons lead the Runnin' Bulldogs with five goals while Lyons has added a team-high four assists on the season. Teammate Breno Correia has also chipped in four helpers. Kpardeh and Javan Ochieng have scored four goals as GWU is outscoring their opponents 26-7 through 12 games. Alan Horrocks has played all 1,080 minutes in goal, producing eight clean sheets and 29 saves.
Radford is coming into the contest with a 2-7-2 overall record and 1-2 mark in league play. WInless in their last four matches, the Highlanders last tasted victory on September 20 with a 3-20decision against Longwood. Gardner-Webb will be the first of two straight ranked opponents to face Radford this season.
The Highlanders are led by Kenshin Akimoto, who has a team-high five goals while adding a pair of assists. Hiromasa Iwai leads Radford with four assists. For the year, RU is being outscored 21-13. Ben Miller has played all minutes in goal for the Highlanders, collecting 43 saves and two shutouts.
