RICHMOND, Va.- Continuing a seven-game road swing, the Gardner-Webb (0-6) men's basketball team was handed a 102-67 loss at Richmond (5-0) on Saturday evening inside Robins Arena.
After junior Ace Talbert knocked down a triple to give the Runnin' Bulldogs an early 3-2 lead, Richmond answered back with a 16-0 run while taking control of the game just over five minutes into the first half.
Redshirt freshman Spence Sims knocked down a jumper to put an end to the run, but the Spiders collected a three-pointer from David Thomas, running the lead to 24-8. The Runnin' Bulldogs were able to trim the deficit to 25-13 following a corner three out of the hands of redshirt junior DJ Jefferson, but Richmond used another crucial spurt to earn a 62-30 lead at the half.
Gardner-Webb started to find its footing from beyond the arc in the second half. After drilling six threes over the first 20 minutes, the Dawgs added an 8-for-14 effort in the second half, easily netting their best game of the season from distance, shooting 45% for the game.
However, Richmond answered every run by the Runnin' Bulldogs while building its biggest lead of the game, 85-37, with 13:38 left in regulation. GWU tallied the next nine points to close the gap to 85-46 but the hill proved too tough to climb as Richmond earned the 102-67 win.
Sims led the Runnin' Bulldogs with a career-high 17 points, knocking down 5-of-9 from deep. Jefferson was the only other Gardner-Webb player to reach double-digits after finishing the game with 11 points on 4-of-6 from the field.
Sophomore Jacob Hogarth turned in a solid performance, chipping in eight points to go along with a team-high five rebounds. Junior Curtis Williams III added four boards and three assists.
Gardner-Webb returns to action on Wednesday, November 26 while opening up the first day of the Live Oak Bank Classic versus Navy in Wilmington, N.C. Tip for that contest is slated for 4 p.m.
