CLEMSON, S.C. – The Gardner-Webb (0-2) men's basketball team dropped a 97-59 contest at Clemson (2-0) on Friday evening inside Littlejohn Coliseum.
Guards Jacob Hudson and Spence Sims led the Runnin' Bulldogs with 11 points each while Julius Clark pitched in nine points. Hudson also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. As a team, Gardner-Webb shot 38% (18-47) from the floor, including 30% (6-20) from the three-point line.
Clemson owned the boards pulling down 47 rebounds compared to 28 for the Dawgs. The Tigers ended the game with a 48% clip from the field after knocking down 37-of-77 shots but were cold from distance, netting only 10-for-36 from deep.
Nick Davidson led all players with 18 points while Carter Welling posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 boards.
Clemson started the game strong, collecting 16 of the first 19 points while building a 22-point lead, 36-14, with 7:45 left in the first half. The Runnin' Bulldogs made a bit of a push to close the half, outscoring Clemson 16-9 down the stretch, but it was the Tigers that controlled a 45-30 lead at the break.
A 14-2 run by the Tigers to open the second half pushed the home team ahead 59-32 and the lead hovered around the 20-point mark the majority of the period.
The Runnin' Bulldogs returh to action on Monday, November 10, playing host to North Greenville in the home opener. Tip is slated for 7 p.m. inside Paul Porter Arena.
