Hogarth's Career Night Leads Runnin' Bulldogs to Win Over Brevard

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Sophomore forward Jacob Hogarth produced a career night with 23 points and 23 rebounds while guiding Gardner-Webb (1-11) men's basketball to a 77-63 win over visiting Brevard (4-4) on Friday evening inside Paul Porter Arena.

In total, the Runnin' Bulldogs received double digit scoring from five different players. Freshman guard Spence Sims chipped in 13 while sophomore guard posted 12. Junior guards Ace Talbert and Curtis Williams III chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Gardner-Webb set several new season-highs, scoring 62 points in the paint on 53.3% (32-60) shooting. The Runnin' Bulldogs were able to turn Brevard over 15 times, collecting 17 points off those miscues. The boards belonged to the Dawgs, 38-25.

The start of the game saw both offenses challenged before back-to-back buckets form Hogarth and Hawkins gave GWU an early 4-0 lead four minutes into the opening half. Brevard got on the board at the 15:27 mark following a jumper by KK Horton.

With the score knotted at 10-all, the Tornado drilled a triple for their first lead of the game, but Gardner-Webb exploded for 11 straight points while garnering its biggest lead at 21-10. However, Brevard refused to give up any more separation after answering each GWU bucket, but it would be the Dawgs who led 32-24 at the break.

Following a steal, Hogarth hit a streaking Sims for a fast break layup, ballooning the Gardner-Webb lead to 42-27 with 16:15 on the clock in the second half. A quick 11-1 run by the Tornado brought the visitors to within five before solid defense turned into offense for the Runnin' Bulldogs.

Sims connected on a layup to give GWU its biggest lead of the game, 77-57, before Brevard closed with the final six points. However, it was too little, too late as the Dawgs pulled out the 77-63 win.

Gardner-Webb returns to action on Monday, December 15, playing host to the Terriers of Wofford College. Tip is slated for 7 p.m. inside Paul Porter Arena.
