FARMVILLE, Va. – Graduate guard
Anthony Selden scored a team-high 22 points, but it was not enough as the Gardner-Webb (10-15, 5-8) men's basketball team fell at Longwood (17-11, 6-7) on Wednesday evening inside the Joan Brock Center.
Sophomore guard
Darryl Simmons II netted 21 points in the defeat, the only other player to record double-digits for the Runnin' Bulldogs. Redshirt-sophomore guard
Shahar Lazar contributed nine points while senior forward
Ademide Badmus led the team in rebounds with six boards.
Junior forward
Jamaine Mann gave the 'Dawgs a 10-7 following a dunk less than five mintues into the contest. However, Longwood used a 15-6 run to take a six-point lead, 22-16. That advantage grew to as many as nine (33-24) while the Lancers took a 31-24 lead into the break.
Longwood continued to apply the pressure to the GWU defense, ballooning its lead to 49-36 following a dunk by Elijah Tucker at the 18:18 mark of the second half. Trailing 60-47, Gardner-Webb ripped off a 15-6 run to climb to within four at 66-62 more than midway through the period.
However, that would be as close as the score would get as Longwood raced back out to a double-digit lead while holding on for the 90-77 win.
Gardner-Webb returns to the friendly confines of Paul Porter Arena on Saturday, February 22, playing host to the Panthers of High Point University. Tip is slated for 2 p.m.
