BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb University softball team bounced back from an early defeat to Chattanooga on day two of Spring in The Springs, beating IU Indy to end the day with a doubleheader split
GAME ONE - Chattanooga 6, Gardner-Webb 1 // 9 innings
The Runnin' Bulldogs and visiting Mocs engaged head-to-head in a pitcher's duel on Saturday afternoon, with just a run separating the two sides between 6.5 innings of play.
It wouldn't be until the bottom of the seventh that Gardner-Webb scratched the tying run across the plate to force extra innings. Junior shortstop
Ella Christopher started with a lead-off double before then advancing to third on a wild pitch. Junior catcher
Taylor Dreher then did enough to bring Christopher home, pushing a grounder to the right side for a 1-1 tie.
Gardner-Webb put the winning run at third in the eighth inning but was unable to cash in. In the ninth however, Chattanooga took advantage of a series of mistakes on the infield and eventually pushed five runs across for a 6-1 lead. That score held out in the bottom half of the frame in a Runnin' Bulldogs loss.
Freshman pitcher
Anna Hornbaker picked up the no decision in the start, tossing 4.1 innings and allowing three hits and just a single run.
GAME TWO - Gardner-Webb 2, IU Indy 1
In the late game, Gardner-Webb used a run in the first, a run in the sixth, and a solid performance in the circle from freshman pitcher
Hannah Frye en route to a 2-1 win.
Christopher kept the line moving from game one, bringing the Runnin' Bulldogs level at 1-1 with an RBI single through the left side in the bottom of the first. The Runnin' Bulldogs wouldn't find another run until the bottom of the sixth, when senior catcher
Jailyn Tineo scored her second, and the 'Dawgs second run off the night off the bat of Dreher.
Despite the offense only scoring two runs, Frye was sensational for the Runnin' Bulldogs to score her fifth win of her debut season. The Kingsport, Tenn. native tossed a complete 7.0 inning game, allowed six hits, just a single run and struck out two.
Overall, Gardner-Webb collected six hits between four players, with Christopher and freshman center fielder
Lauren Spainhower picking up two each for the contest.
