Simmons II Earns Big South Second Team All-Conference; Lazar Tabbed Academic All-Conference

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Sophomore guard Darryl Simmons II of the Gardner-Webb men's basketball team has been named Big South Second Team All-Conference as announced by the league on Tuesday, March 4 while teammate Shahar Lazar was named to the Big South Conference All-Academic Team.

Simmons, coming off his best year in a GWU uniform, put together a stellar season with a team-leading 17.4 points per game, which ranked third in the conference. Simmons made a living behind the three-point line, knocking down a Big South-leading 78 triples, including 2.7 per game.

Simmons had his best performance of the year on Saturday, February 1 at Winthrop where he posted a career-high 40 point and eight three-pointers. In total, Simmons scored double digit scoring in 25-of-29 games. He shot 44% from the floor and 40% from behind the arc.

Redshirt-sophomore Shahar Lazar landed on the 2025 Big South Conference All-Academic Team. Lazar, majoring in Management, has a 3.99 GPA. Lazar has also provided max effort on the court for Gardner-Webb, seeing action in 28-of-29 games with three starts. He averaged 6.0 points per game while scoring double figures seven times. Lazar posted a season-high 12 points on a pair of occasions.

Simmons and the rest of the Runnin' Bulldogs will be back in action on Wednesday, March 5 as they take on USC Upstate in the opening game of the 2025 Hercules Big South Men's Basketball Championship in Johnson City, Tenn. Tip is slated for 7:30 p.m.
