Box Score JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Gardner-Webb men's basketball team saw its season come to an end with a 85-64 defeat at the hands of No. 1 seed High Point during quarterfinal action of the Hercules Tires Big South Basketball Championships on Friday afternoon inside Freedom Hall.
Sophomore guard Darryl Simmons II led the way for the 'Dawgs, pouring in XX points to go with X rebounds. Senior forward Ademide Badmus chipped in XX points as the only other player for GWU to reach double figures.
Selden put the 'Dawgs on the board with a corner three early in the first half, giving Gardner-Webb a 3-2 lead. After High Point reeled off four in a row, Badmus finished on a tough layup to give the visitors a 9-6 advantage.
However, the Panthers used a 10-2 scoring run over four minutes of game action to build a 16-11 lead heading to the under-12 media timeout. From that point, the game became a back-and-forth affair until High Point ripped off a crucial run of 9-2 while ballooning its lead to 37-28 with less than four to play before halftime.
Simmons looked to keep Gardner-Webb in the game with back-to-back threes, but the Panthers finished the half scoring 14 of the final 18, taking a 53-38 lead into the intermission.
Playing from behind, the Runnin' Bulldogs started the second half warm from the field, knocking down a series of baskets while scoring nine of the first 16, cutting into the HPU lead with 15:35 on the clock.
High Point started to gain control of the game, pushing out to a 65-47 lead before Mann connected on a spinning hoop-and-harm, keeping the Runnin' Bulldogs within striking distance at the 14:44 mark.
However, the score was never closer than 12 points as the Panthers finished strong down the stretch on their way to the 85-64 win.
