TAMPA, FLA - The Gardner-Webb University track and field team continued its outdoor season on Friday and Saturday, competing at the South Florida Invitational, hosted by USF and the Duke Invitational in split squad action
For Gardner-Webb, Calvin Fernandez got the team off to a great start by finishing third in the men's javelin throw on Friday. Just weeks after setting a new school record in the event, Fernandez placed third with a distance of 61.09 meters.
Devin Redd and Magnum Chesnut were also in action for GWU in the men's discus throw. Redd put up a ninth place performance with 48.13 meters, while Chestnut placed 14th by way of 43.25 meters.
Big South Indoor champion and defending conference athlete of the week Quentin Peterson competed for GWU in the men's hammer throw on Friday afternoon. Peterson placed seventh, posting a distance of 55.47 meters. Peterson was even better in the men's shot put, winning the event in style with 17.77 meters. To complete an outstanding individual day, Peterson was also third with 60.30 meters in men's discus throw.
Gardner-Webb was also strong among a solid group of teams, with Isa van Sintemaartensdijk taking eighth in the women's javelin throw. van Sintemaartensdijk posted a distance of 37.97 meters
The Runnin' Bulldogs combined for eighth and ninth in the women's hammer throw. In eighth, Zoie Johnson recorded a more-than-solid 50.96 meters, while Madison Boyd was in ninth with a strong 47.76 meters. Johnson was back in action in the women's discus throw, taking fifth after scoring 46.78 meters.
Paige Boyd was in action for GWU in the women's high jump. With a distance of 1.60 meters on the board, Boyd took home an 11th place finish.
DJ Black took to the track for Gardner-Webb in the men's 200 meter dash. In 21.65 seconds, Black put up a time good enough for 27th place.
In the men's 100 meter dash, Nico Wright was in action for the Runnin' Bulldogs. Wright crossed the line in 10.70 seconds, taking 25th place. Black also competed in the same event, scored 27th in 10.75 seconds.
Over at Duke, Jessica Perriello took part in the women's 800 meter race. Perriello crossed the stripe in 2:14.34. Ryan Morita and Nathan Cremin also took part in the events in Durham, competing in the men's 800 meters, with Morita finishing in 1:55.41 while Cremin completed the race in 1:56.38
