Women's Lacrosse Ousted by Furman in Big South Opening Round

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Gardner-Webb (3-14) women's lacrosse team saw its season come to an end in the opening round of the Big South Tournament, falling to Furman (14-3) by the final of 19-5 on Tuesday evening inside Paladin Stadium.

Freshman Katie Westbrook led the way for the Runnin' Bulldogs, posting a team-high two goals. Three other players recorded one goal each on the night.

Furman controlled the first quarter of play, tallying the only six goals of the opening period while taking a 6-0 lead into the second. After Paige Harman put the Paladins up by seven, graduate Gianna Nardini put the 'Dawgs on the scoreboard with a free position goal with just under 10 minutes to play before half.

Furman netted the next two scores, but the Runnin' Bulldogs came back with back-to-back goals of their own by Westbrook and freshman Jules Brown, trimming the Paladins lead to 9-3. However, Furman tacked on a late goal while taking a 10-3 advantage into the break.

The third period mirrored the opening frame with Furman scoring four times while the Runnin' Bulldogs were blanked for the second time in the game.

That scoring run extended to six straight after the Paladins posted the first two goals of the fourth quarter   before junior Emma Duchscherer put an end to the scoring run, netting her 22nd goal of the season following a great find by redshirt senior Rebecca Ferrina. Westbrook followed that with her second of the game as Duchscherer became the facilitator, registering her lone assist of the contest.

However, Furman ended the game with the final three goals to put the margin of victory at 19-5.
