HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb (16-33, 5-15) baseball team dropped a 14-11 high-scoring affair at High Point (35-15, 6-4) on Saturday evening inside Williard Stadium. GWU launched three more homeruns, but it was not enough to overcome a pair of six-run innings by the Panthers.
For the second straight game, Bennett Shealor launched a ball over the fence, this time to give the Runnin' Bulldogs a 2-1 lead in the top of the second frame. That lead quickly ballooned to 7-1 as Dale Francis Jr. and Nick Capozzi got in on the homerun barrage, accounting for five more runs over the next two half innings.
However, High Point came back to knot the contest at 7-7 with six runs in the bottom of the fourth before blowing the game open with another six-spot in the home half of the sixth while pushing out to a 13-7 lead heading into the final third of the contest.
Gardner-Webb continued to battle, picking up one run in the seventh following an RBI single by Gavin Johnson before cutting the deficit to 13-11 with three more runs in the eighth after Garrett Macias roped a bases-loaded double down the right field line, clearing the pads.
The Panthers added a single run in the bottom of the eighth before retiring GWU in order in the ninth to hold on to the three-run win.
Game three of the series will take place tomorrow afternoon with the first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
