BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Junior second baseman Merik Carter laced a ball to the right center gap, scoring Aaron Morgan as the Gardner-Webb (17-34, 6-16) baseball team rallied from a six-run deficit in the ninth inning to walk-off Charleston Southern (26-20, 12-10) by the final of 9-8 on Thursday evening inside John Henry Moss Stadium.
Trailing 8-2 entering the bottom of the ninth, the Runnin' Bulldogs posted six runs on five hits to send the game into extras before picking up their third extra-inning win of the season.
After both teams went scoreless over the initial two frames, Charleston Southern pushed across on the scoreboard with five runs over the third and fourth innings. AJ Martin and Chandler Tuupo fueled the surge with a pair of two-run homeruns.
The Runnin' Bulldogs were finally able to scratch a run in the bottom of the fifth following a sacrifice fly off the bat of Lawson Knight.
However, the Buccaneers extended the lead to 8-1 with a single run in the seventh followed by two more in the top of the eighth, controlling the game at 8-1 as Gardner-Webb was down to its last three outs.
A defensive miscue by CSU with one out in the home half of the eighth proved costly for the Buccaneers after Dale Francis Jr. roped a base hit to left, plating Nick Capozzi who benefited from the error.
A solid defensive outing in the top of the ninth set the stage for an epic comeback by the 'Dawgs. Matt Ilgenfritz started the frame with a hard line drive single to left before back-to-back doubles by Aaron Morgan and Carson Willoughby pushed across two runs, trimming the deficit to 8-4.
Capozzi then added an RBI single followed by a two-run base hit by Garrett Macias off the glove of the Bucs second baseman. The Runnin' Bulldogs scored the tying run on a groundout by Francis, sending the game to extras.
Junior Jerek Hobb shut the Buccaneers down in order in the top of the 10th, including a pair of strikeouts, giving GWU a chance to walk it off in the home half. Morgan led the frame off with a double to right center before Carter matched the effort with a two-bagger to the same spot, scoring Morgan for the game-winning run.
Game two of the series will take place tomorrow afternoon with a first pitch slated for 3 p.m.
