HARRISONBURG, Va. – Senior forward Jaylen Orr posted his second game-winning goal in as many games while leading the Gardner-Webb (2-0) men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over James Madison (0-2) on Sunday evening at Sentara Park. The Runnin' Bulldogs finished the Fairfield by Marriott Invitational with a perfect record.

Gardner-Webb held a 13-9 advantage on total shots and 5-2 mark with shots on goal. Each team earned five corners each for their respective clubs. Senior keeper Alan Horrocks played all 90 minutes, picking up two saves on his way to the second straight clean sheet.

The Runnin' Bulldogs dominated the ball early in the contest, spending much of the first half on the final third of the field. The persistence paid off when Orr continued his great start to the season with a goal at the 19:41 mark on the clock. Robbie Lyons and Kpardeh Samson each picked up an assist on the play that gave Gardner-Webb a 1-0 lead.

James Madison looked poised to even the score at 1-all, but the GWU defense stood strong while fending off a pair of corner kicks by the Dukes. The remainder of the first 45 proved to be a stalemate as Gardner-Webb went into the break with the one-goal advantage.

Forward Javan Ochieng nearly missed putting the Dawgs ahead 2-nil just five minutes into the second half, but his strike from the right wing sailed just wide of the net. James Madison had its best look on goal in the 66th minute as back-to-back possessions resulted in clean looks at net. However, a block and save by Horrocks preserved the slim lead for GWU.

Scoring opportunities were at a premium over the final 20 minutes of the contest as the Gardner-Webb defense stood tall on its way to its second shoutout in as many games to start the 2025 season.

Gardner-Webb will return to the pitch on Friday, August 29, traveling to take on Davidson in a non-conference clash. First kick is slated for 7 p.m.
