No. 15 Men's Soccer Opens Conference Play Against Winthrop

| By:

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The No. 15 Gardner-Webb (6-1, 0-0 Big South) opens conference play on Saturday afternoon while welcoming the Eagles of Winthrop University (0-6, 0-0 Big South) to Greene-Harbison Stadium.

Winthrop leads the all-time series over the Runnin' Bulldogs by a tally of 17-10-3, but it was GWU that took last year's meeting in Rock Hill, S.C., 1-0. The two teams first met in 1990 with Winthrop taking a 2-1 win in Boiling Springs. Over the last eight meetings, Gardner-Webb holds a 6-1-1 overall record against the Eagles, while the last five games have been decided by one goal.

The Runnin' Bulldogs took care of Lipscomb, 3-0, the last time out, improving its overall record to 6-1, which is the second-best start in program history. Freshman forward Javan Ochieng tallied his first multi-goal game of his career as he put two past the keeper in the win.

Senior forward Jaylen Orr leads the team with four goals to go along with one assist, while graduate midfielder Robbie Lyons has two scores and a team-leading four helpers. Gardner-Webb is outscoring its opponents 15-5 on the season as senior goalie Alan Horrocks has five clean sheets on the year, playing all 630 minutes.

Winthrop comes into the contest having had a rough go of it to start the season with the Eagles the only team in the conference without a win. On the season, Winthrop has been outscored by its opponents 15-2.

Haruto Horli and Dragen Vrataric each have one goal on the season for the Eagles while keeper Jack Kilstrom has played all 540 minutes in cage.

Saturday's game is set to kickoff at 6 p.m. and will be streamed live on ESPN+ while live stats can be found at www.gwusports.com.
