BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The No. 12 Gardner-Webb (7-1-1) men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw with visiting Florida Gulf Coast (5-3-1) on Tuesday evening at Greene-Harbison Stadium.
Gardner-Webb held a sizeable 23-8 advantage on shots but could muster only four shots on goal while FGCU earned three shots on cage. The Runnin' Bulldogs also controlled corner kicks, 12-2.
Sophomore wing Samson Kpardeh led all players with six shots while graduate midfielder Robbie Lyons finished with five shots and the lone goal for the Dawgs. Junior defender Breno Correia tallied an assist in the draw.
Although the Eagles had the first good look at goal in the fourth minute, but it would be GWU that was the aggressor the majority of the opening 45. After several near misses, the Runnin' Bulldogs finally found paydirt in the 34th minute after Lyons took a great feed from Correia before depositing the ball in the back of the net.
Senior goalie Alan Horrocks made one of his four saves at the 46:58 mark of the second, preserving the minimal lead for Gardner-Webb. However, the Eagles were able to breakthrough with 66:08 on the clock after a goal by Victor Lopes.
Correia had the last good look for the Dawgs in the 89th minute but the ball was saved by Oliver Weng as the game ended in the 1-1 tie.
Gardner-Webb returns to the pitch on Friday, September 26, traveling to Clinton, S.C. to take on Presbyterian in Big South action. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
