Runnin' Bulldogs Notch Key Big South Win With 52-45 Victory at Charleston Southern

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's basketball team (6-13, 3-2 Big South) scored a key victory to keep pace in the Big South race on Saturday afternoon, defeating Charleston Southern (5-14, 3-3 Big South) on the road, 52-45

Points were once again at a premium on Saturday afternoon but Gardner-Webb did enough to pick up the victory. The Runnin' Bulldogs held Charleston Southern to 15 points or less in three of four quarters, including just four in the second and nine in the fourth.

The Runnin' Bulldogs were largely paced by four different players on Saturday. To begin, junior guard Amina Gray bounced back in a big way, scoring a game-high 16 points on 4-of-9 shooting and three made three-pointes, freshman guard Makayla Legette added 14 points on six made field goals, while junior forward Amira Ofunniyin scored seven points next to 10 rebounds. With senior guard Nyla Walker also scoring seven, those four players scored 44 of the Dawgs 52 points

Walker was especially good for Gardner-Webb early, with the senior stepping up for a big three, and a finish out on the fast break in the first quarter, as well as opening the second quarter with her third bucket of the game. In just a 9-4 second, Legette also added a three pointer of her own

Charleston Southern climbed to within five with 9:44 remaining in the game, but Gardner-Webb put the clamps on to see things out. With eight points in the fourth quarter alone by Gray, the Runnin' Bulldogs were able to lean on a key member of its offense, on top of an already stingy defensive effort. When Ofunniyin finished off a fast break at the line in the final 15 seconds, Gardner-Webb was out with a 52-45 win
