CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Gardner-Webb goalkeeper Oliver Weng has been named the Big South Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Weng's selection marks the third consecutive week a Gardner-Webb men's soccer player has earned a Big South weekly honor. Christian Samaripa and Leonardo Cristescu each earned Freshman of the Week recognition in the previous two weeks, respectively.
Weng helped lead the Runnin' Bulldogs to a pair of victories last week, recording 11 saves while allowing just one goal in wins over ETSU and Longwood. Gardner-Webb has won its last five matches.
Weng opened the week with six saves in a 2-1 road victory over ETSU on Tuesday. He followed with another strong performance Saturday against Longwood, making five saves, including a penalty-kick stop in the second half, to record a clean sheet in Gardner-Webb's 3-0 victory.
The honor recognizes Weng's continued consistency throughout the season. He has started all 10 matches for Gardner-Webb, recording 35 saves, a .778 save percentage and 10 goals allowed.
Gardner-Webb returns to action Tuesday to face Virginia. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
