BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb (3-23, 1-10) men's basketball fell 103-85 at home versus Winthrop (19-8, 11-1) on Thursday evening inside Paul Porter Arena.
Sophomore forward Jacob Hogarth put together a solid performance, leading the Runnin' Bulldogs in points (20), rebounds (8), blocks (4) and assists (4). Jacob Hudson went 5-of-10 from the field, finishing with 17 points while Colin Hawkins chipped in 13.
As a team, Gardner-Webb shot 51% from the field after knocking down 31-of-61 attempts, including 11 makes from distance. The Runnin' Bulldogs also went 12-for-19 from the charity stripe.
Hawkins knocked down a three at the 17:56 mark of the opening half while giving Gardner-Webb a 7-4 advantage, but the Eagles responded with 11 unanswered to take a 15-7 lead. Hogarth muscled his way to the basket for a tough layup, keeping the Runnin' Bulldogs within striking distance at 22-20 before another 11-0 spurt pushed the visitors ahead by double-digits and into halftime with a 55-35 lead.
Gardner-Webb opened the second half with an 8-3 scoring run, closing the gap to 15 points, 58-43 less than two minutes into the period. The Eagles maintained the distant advantage over the next four-plus minutes of game action before Hudson tallied four straight as part of an 8-2 run, closing the gap to 72-62 midway through the frame.
However, Winthrop put together a crucial 13-0 run over three and a half minutes, ballooning the lead to 85-62. From that point, the Gardner-Webb could not draw any closer than 13 points, eventually falling 103-85.
Gardner-Webb makes the quick turnaround to host High Point on Saturday, February 14. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. inside Paul Porter Arena.
