BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. — Gardner-Webb earned a doubleheader split with Valparaiso on Saturday at John Henry Moss Stadium, dropping a tightly contested opener, 11–10, before responding with a dominant 12–1 victory in the nightcap.
Game 1: Valparaiso 11, Gardner-Webb 10
The Runnin' Bulldogs put together a relentless offensive effort in the opener, collecting 14 hits and overcoming multiple deficits, but Valparaiso scored twice in the top of the seventh inning to escape with an 11–10 win.
After Valparaiso jumped out to a 4–0 lead in the second inning, Gardner-Webb answered immediately with four runs in the bottom half. Kelvin Agosto delivered a two-run single to tie the game, part of a four-RBI afternoon for the senior outfielder.
Gardner-Webb continued to battle back throughout the game, scoring two runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to erase a 9–6 deficit and tie the game at 9–9. Andres Sanchez went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two walks, while Zack Thompson finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Drew Ripepi added two hits and two RBIs.
Valparaiso regained the lead with a two-run triple in the seventh, but Gardner-Webb made one last push in the bottom of the inning. Thompson scored on a groundout to pull the Bulldogs within one before the comeback attempt stalled.
Game 2: Gardner-Webb 12, Valparaiso 1
Gardner-Webb wasted little time responding in game two, erupting for eight runs over the first two innings and cruising to a 12–1 victory to close the day.
The Bulldogs scored four runs in the first inning and followed with four more in the second, highlighted by a two-run homer from Merik Carter and a solo shot from Matt Ilgenfritz. Carter finished with three runs scored and two RBIs, while Ilgenfritz drove in two and added a sacrifice fly.
Sanchez stayed hot at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs, while Thompson collected two hits and two RBIs. Ryan Kennell and Kelvin Agosto each added multi-hit performances as Gardner-Webb totaled 12 hits in the win.
On the mound, Reid Bertram was outstanding, tossing a complete-game effort. He allowed just one run on six hits while striking out five, keeping Valparaiso in check throughout the afternoon.
Gardner-Webb returns to action on Tuesday, February 17, traveling to Columbia, S.C. to take on the Gamecocks of South Carolina. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
