CHARLESTON, S.C. – Guards Jacob Hudson and Jamias Ferere scored 15 points each while Jacob Hogarth posted his sixth double-double of the season with 11 points and a team-high 11 rebounds, but it was not enough as Gardner-Webb (3-25, 1-12) men's basketball fell 75-66 at Charleston Southern (13-15, 4-9) on Tuesday evening.
Gardner-Webb finished the game shooting 38.8% from the floor, including 6-for-27 from distance. The Runnin' Bulldogs also connected on 8-of-11 shots from the charity stripe. Rebounding was heavily in the favor of the Bucs with Charleston Southern owning the glass, 48-39. GWU was also able to post 28 bench points and 36 points in the paint.
The Buccaneers set the tone early, jumping out to a double-digit lead in the first half behind strong shooting and control of the paint. Charleston Southern shot 47 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes while taking a 40–28 advantage into halftime.
Gardner-Webb showed resilience in the second half, trimming the deficit on multiple occasions with balanced scoring a strong inside attack. Despite the push, the Runnin' Bulldogs was unable to close the gap to single digits for long stretches, as Charleston Southern consistently answered with timely baskets before milking the clock with successful trips to the free-throw line.
The Runnin' Bulldogs return to the court on Thursday, February 19 with a trip to Radford for Big South Conference action. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
