BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. — Gardner-Webb (3-3) was limited offensively on Thursday afternoon, falling 6–0 to FDU (1-0) in the series opener at John Henry Moss Stadium.
The Runnin' Bulldogs were held to three hits despite drawing six walks and putting runners aboard in multiple innings. Gardner-Webb threatened early, loading the bases in the first inning and again creating traffic in the middle frames, but were unable to deliver the timely hit.
FDU scored two runs in the opening frame and added runs in the fourth and sixth to build its advantage. Gardner-Webb pitching settled in after the early damage, as Jerek Hobb provided 5.1 innings of relief, allowing just two earned runs while striking out four to keep the game within reach.
Offensively, Matt Ilgenfritz singled and was hit by a pitch to reach base twice, while Anthony Hausner and Thad Ector each recorded pinch-hit doubles. Merik Carter also reached base twice and swiped a bag as Gardner-Webb continued to apply pressure on the basepaths.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will be back in action tomorrow with a pair of games. Gardner-Webb faces FDU at 3 p.m. before hosting Dartmouth in the nightcap at 7 p.m.
