Runnin' Bulldogs Split Saturday Action at Jax State Tournament

OXFORD, AL - The Gardner-Webb softball team split Saturday action at the Jax State Tournament, defeating Northwestern State before falling to the host Gamecocks in the nightcap

Game One - Gardner-Webb 10, Northwestern State 6
In a wild Saturday morning game, the Runnin' Bulldogs posted 10 runs on 15 hits, pulling away to beat Northwestern State

After the Demons added two runs in the top of the first on separate wild pitches, Gardner-Webb tied the game in the bottom of the first. Senior first baseman Maggie Knight sent a two-RBI single down the left field line, tying the game at 2-2

GWU then broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the second. Junior left fielder Brooke Freschi and sophomore third baseman each hit RBI doubles, with Colley's hitting resulting in two runs and a 5-3 lead. After senior catcher Taylor Dreher walked a sixth run in, Colley returned to the plate for another RBI single to make the score 7-3

Colley continued an excellent individual game in the fifth with a two-run home run to left field, at that point giving GWU a 10-6 lead that held up as final. She'd eventually finish the game 3-for-4 with three runs scored and five runs batted in

In the circle meanwhile, senior right-hander Alli Stidham picked up the win after going 4.2 innings, allowing six hits and five runs. Freshman right-hander Glenna McLamb finished the contest with 2.1 innings, allowing two hits and no runs

Game Two - Jacksonville State 16, Gardner-Webb 4
In the late game, Gardner-Webb would fall behind early in what eventually became a five-inning defeat

Down 3-0 in the top of the second, senior right fielder Jailyn Tineo posted the first Gardner-Webb run with an RBI double into the left center field gap.

Following the double from Tineo, the Runnin' Bulldogs wouldn't score again until the top of the fifth. Stidham then connected on her second home run of the year, a three run shot to straight away center to bring the score to 16-4

As for the offense, both Stidham and Dreher finished the game with two hits a piece for GWU, while Colley, Tineo and Freschi added one hit.
