BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. — The Gardner-Webb (6-3) Runnin' Bulldogs continued their strong start to the season with a 6–2 victory over the Dartmouth (1-2) Big Green on Sunday afternoon at John Henry Moss Stadium.
After a scoreless first two innings, Gardner-Webb seized control in the bottom of the third with a four-run outburst. Thad Ector opened the scoring with an RBI single before Matt Ilgenfritz delivered the big blow, ripping a two-run double to left to make it 3–0. An error allowed another run to cross, giving the Runnin' Bulldogs early breathing room.
The Dawgs added to the lead in the fourth, capitalizing on aggressive baserunning and Dartmouth miscues to plate two more unearned runs. Ilgenfritz continued his productive afternoon with an RBI single, pushing the advantage to 6–0.
On the mound, Reid Bertram set the tone for Gardner-Webb. The right-hander went seven strong innings, allowing just one run on five hits while keeping the Big Green off balance all afternoon. Bertram earned the win to move to 2–0 on the season.
Dartmouth scratched across a run in the sixth and added another in the ninth, but the Runnin' Bulldogs' bullpen closed the door. Matt Manley worked a clean eighth before the combination of Devin Pressley and Anthony Hausner finished off the final outs.
Ilgenfritz led the Bulldogs offensively with two hits and three RBIs, while Merik Carter scored twice and sparked the lineup from the leadoff spot. Gardner-Webb's pitching staff combined for seven strikeouts and limited Dartmouth to just two runs despite traffic late.
The Runnin' Bulldogs return to action on Friday, February 27, opening a three-game set against App State inside John Henry Moss Stadium. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
