NORFOLK, Va. — The Gardner-Webb (0-4) women's lacrosse team showed resilience and fight down the stretch but ultimately fell 12–8 on the road to Old Dominion (2-2) on Wednesday afternoon.
The Runnin' Bulldogs were tested early as ODU jumped out to a 4–0 lead in the opening quarter, but Gardner-Webb responded before the first break when Maddie Tredway found the back of the net to get the Dawgs on the board. That momentum carried into the second quarter, as GWU continued to generate quality looks on offense, highlighted by goals from Katie Westbrook and Addi Cook to keep the game within reach.
Cook led the Bulldogs offensively with four goals, including three in the fourth quarter, as Gardner-Webb mounted a late comeback attempt. Trailing 11–5 entering the final period, the Runnin' Bulldogs rattled off three unanswered goals, all from Cook, to cut the deficit to 11–8 with just over six minutes remaining. Tredway played a key role in the surge, finishing the day with two goals and two assists.
Jazmyn Morris added a goal early in the second half, while Gardner-Webb finished with eight goals from five different scorers. The Runnin' Bulldogs totaled 21 shots and were perfect on clears (12-for-12), continuing to pressure Old Dominion throughout the contest.
Defensively, goalkeeper Emma Anderson turned in a strong performance with nine saves, including several key stops during Gardner-Webb's fourth-quarter push. The Runnin' Bulldogs also forced multiple turnovers and limited Old Dominion to just one goal over the final 15 minutes of play until a late man-up tally sealed the outcome.
Gardner-Webb returns to action on Saturday, March 7, playing host to Sacred Heart in the Runnin' Bulldogs home opener. Game time set for 12 p.m. inside Spangler Stadium.
