BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb University softball team split day two at the Runnin' Bulldog Classic, winning a wild extra-innings game over Youngstown State before falling to Tarleton State in the late game
Game One - Gardner-Webb 13, Youngstown State 12 // 8 Innings
Gardner-Webb opened its second day at the Runnin' Bulldog Classic with a wild win over Youngstown State, one where the Runnin' Bulldogs trailed 6-0, rallied back for an 11-7 lead by the seventh, before losing said lead and having to respond with its second walk-off in less than 24 hours
After Youngstown State went ahead 6-0 in the top of the second,
Alli Stidham brought a couple of runs back with a home run over the center field fence. After two, GWU trailed 6-2
Two more in the third by way of an RBI double by
Maggie Knight, who'd later score on a wild pitch, brought the Dawgs back to down 6-4 before a huge fifth inning surge. In the fifth, GWU scored six runs to take what seemed to be a commanding 10-6 lead.
Reese Collier delivered the biggest swing of the day to that point, clubbing a grand slam out to right center, breaking what was a 6-6 tie and bringing Brinkley Stadium to its feet
Youngstown State got one back in the top of the sixth but
Taylor Dreher quickly took back the four-run lead for Gardner-Webb, finding the gap for an RBI double that allowed
LY Forte to score all the way from first. GWU took an 11-7 lead into the 7th.
The visiting Penguins responded to tie the game. A single to right turned into a disaster for Gardner-Webb, with a kicked ball allowing three runs to score. An ensuing RBI triple down the line in left saw the Runnin' Bulldogs go from up 11-7 to tied at 11-11 in just a couple of at bats.
On to the 8th and down 12-11 after Youngstown State scored its tiebreaker runner, Gardner-Webb answered. Dreher found the same gap to score
Madden McMahan-Waters from second and Stidham from first, handing the Runnin' Bulldogs a 13-12 win and its second walk-off win of the weekend
GWU finished game one with 13 runs on 14 hits, while Youngstown State scored 12 runs on 11 hits. Freshman
Glenna McLamb nabbed her first collegiate win by pitching the extra frame
Game Two - Tarleton State 14, Gardner-Webb 3 // 5 Innings
In the late game, Gardner-Webb gave up two runs in the first and second and six runs in the third, eventually falling behind 10-0 before a 14-3 loss in five innings
GWU got on the board in the third thanks to a wild pitch that drove in
Lauren Spainhower from third. Dreher continued a good individual day with an RBI ground-out in the fourth before
Jailyn Tineo singled across another run not long after, making the score 14-3
Tineo finished as the lone GWU player with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 in the game with an RBI. Collier and
Maggie Knight also posted the other hits for the Dawgs, who finished the contest with three runs on four hits
