CULL0WHEE, N.C. — Gardner-Webb battled throughout Wednesday afternoon but ultimately fell 8-4 to Western Carolina (15-7) in a midweek matchup at Hennon Stadium.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (12-9) showed early promise, striking first in the opening inning. After working a pair of walks, Drew Ripepi delivered an RBI single up the middle to plate the game's first run and give Gardner-Webb a 1-0 lead.
Western Carolina responded in the second with a two-run home run, and despite strong moments from the Runnin' Bulldogs, the Catamounts used a big fifth inning to seize control of the game.
Ripepi continued his standout performance in the fourth inning, launching a solo home run to even the score at 2-2. He finished a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs and a walk, leading the Gardner-Webb offense.
After Western Carolina answered with four runs across the fourth and fifth innings, Gardner-Webb chipped away in the seventh. Daniel Smith sparked the rally with a two-run home run to left field, scoring Ripepi and cutting the deficit to 6-4. Smith ended the day 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
The Runnin' Bulldogs threatened again in the eighth, putting runners on the corners, but were unable to capitalize. Western Carolina added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings to put the game out of reach.
On the mound, Gardner-Webb utilized a staff approach, with Anthony Hausner getting the start and tossing three innings. The bullpen combined for five innings of work, with Connor Busson and Colby Humphries each delivering scoreless outings in relief.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will return to Big South Conference play this weekend, traveling to take on Charleston Southern. First pitch on Friday is slated for 6 p.m.
