BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb (0-10, 0-1) women's lacrosse team battled throughout the afternoon but fell to Wofford (4-7, 2-0), 18-7, on Saturday at Spangler Stadium.
The Runnin' Bulldogs showed balance offensively with seven goals from five different players, while also receiving a strong effort in goal from Emma Anderson, who recorded 11 saves.
Wofford jumped out to an early advantage, scoring the first five goals of the contest before Gardner-Webb responded late in the opening quarter. Jazmyn Morris got the Runnin' Bulldogs on the board with an unassisted strike at the 3:56 mark, and Maddie Tredway followed just under a minute later with a goal assisted by Emma Duchscherer to cut the deficit to 8-2 heading into the second.
Gardner-Webb continued to compete in the second quarter, as Tredway scored her second goal of the game and Duchscherer added another tally off a pass from Tredway. Despite the Dawgs' offensive push, Wofford carried a 14-4 lead into halftime.
The Runnin' Bulldogs found success again in the third quarter when Katie Westbrook scored off an assist from McKensie Gehris, who finished the day with a team-high three assists.
Westbrook added another goal in the fourth quarter and Addi Cook closed the scoring for Gardner-Webb with a goal assisted by Gehris with 5:50 remaining.
Tredway and Westbrook led the Runnin' Bulldogs with two goals each, while Morris, Duchscherer and Cook also found the back of the net. Gehris paced the offense with three assists.
Defensively, Emma Anderson played the full 60 minutes in goal and made 11 saves while also collecting three ground balls. Gardner-Webb recorded 14 ground balls and went 11-for-15 on clears in the contest.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will return to action on Saturday, April 4, traveling to Rock Hill, S.C. for a date with Winthrop. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
