RADFORD, Va. - The Gardner-Webb (1-12, 1-3) women's lacrosse team battled early but were unable to hold off a second-quarter surge from Radford (3-11, 2-3), falling 10–6 on Saturday afternoon at the SORC..
Gardner-Webb started the game with strong momentum, opening the scoring midway through the first quarter when Emma Duchscherer found the back of the net to give the Runnin' Bulldogs a 1–0 lead. Just a few minutes later, Abby Hardiman capitalized on a man-up opportunity, finishing a pass from Jazmyn Morris to extend the advantage to 2–0. Radford responded late in the period, but Gardner-Webb carried a 2–1 lead into the second quarter.
The Highlanders took control during a high-scoring second frame. Radford scored four straight goals to jump ahead 5–2, but Gardner-Webb answered with a resilient stretch. Hardiman converted another man-up goal off an assist from Maddie Treadway, and Morris followed with a free-position tally to pull the Bulldogs within one. After Radford briefly extended the lead, Hardiman struck again with her third goal of the afternoon, this time off a feed from McKensie Gehris to close the half with Radford leading 6–5.
Radford widened the gap in the third quarter, scoring twice while holding Gardner-Webb scoreless to push the lead to 8–5 heading into the final period. The Runnin' Bulldogs continued to fight in the fourth, earning another man-up opportunity that Katie Westbrook converted with an assist from Jules Brown to make it 9–6. However, the Highlanders added a late insurance goal to seal the 10–6 result.
Hardiman led the Gardner-Webb offense with a hat trick, while Morris added a goal and an assist. Duchscherer and Westbrook also found the net for the Bulldogs. In goal, Emma Anderson turned in a strong performance with 17 saves while facing 35 shots.
Gardner-Webb finished with 21 shots and controlled 10 draws in the contest, but Radford used a 35–21 shot advantage and a strong second-quarter run to secure the victory.
The Runnin' Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday, April 15 as they host the Mercer Bears in Big South action. First draw is slated for 3 p.m. inside Spangler Stadium.
