RADFORD, Va. - Gardner-Webb (18-22, 6-9) was unable to generate offense on Sunday afternoon as Radford (18-18, 7-8) secured a 3–0 victory at Carter Memorial Stadium.
Gardner-Webb starter Reid Bertram delivered a strong outing on the mound despite taking the loss. The right-hander worked seven innings, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out five and walking four. Bertram kept the game scoreless through the first four frames and worked out of early trouble in the opening inning after Radford placed two runners on base.
The Runnin' Bulldogs threatened for the first time in the fourth inning. Kelvin Agosto reached on a walk and Anthony Hausner later reached on a Radford fielding error to put two runners aboard with two outs, but the Highlanders were able to escape the inning and keep the contest scoreless.
Radford broke through in the bottom of the fifth. After a walk and single put runners on base, Hunter Keen delivered an RBI single up the middle to plate the game's first run and give the Highlanders a 1–0 lead.
Gardner-Webb's best opportunity came in the seventh inning. Drew Ripepi sparked the rally with a single through the left side, and Daniel Smith followed with a base hit to right field to put runners on the corners with one out. Smith later stole second to move both runners into scoring position, but Radford reliever Trey Ludy entered and recorded a strikeout to end the threat.
The Highlanders added to their lead in the bottom half of the seventh when Keen lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to bring home another run and make it 2–0. Radford extended the margin again in the eighth inning with an RBI fielder's choice to push the score to 3–0.
Gardner-Webb managed just two hits in the game, coming from Ripepi and Smith, while Smith also recorded a stolen base. Radford's pitching duo of Daniel Quintana and Ludy combined to strike out eight Dawgs while holding Gardner-Webb scoreless.
Jerek Hobb worked the eighth inning in relief for the Bulldogs and struck out two while allowing one run.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will return to action on Tuesday, April 21 as they play host to Western Carolina in a non-conference showdown at John Henry Moss Stadium. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
