ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb baseball team secured a win in its Big South weekend series at UNC Asheville in dominant fashion on Friday afternoon, riding a complete-game shutout from starting pitcher Matt Stuart to a 6–0 victory over the Bulldogs at Greenwood Field.
Gardner-Webb improved to 15–16 overall and 5–6 in conference play after a well-rounded performance that featured strong pitching and timely hitting. Stuart delivered the highlight of the afternoon, throwing all nine innings while allowing just two hits and one walk. The right-hander struck out four and needed only 109 pitches to secure the win, keeping UNC Asheville off the scoreboard and limiting the Bulldogs to just two total baserunners with hits.
The Runnin' Bulldogs broke through offensively in the third inning following a two-RBI single off the bat of Kelvin Agosto that drove in the first two runs of the game, giving Gardner-Webb a 2–0 advantage. The offense continued to build momentum in the fourth inning, plating three additional runs to stretch the lead to 5–0.
Matt Ilgenfritz and Ethan Liao led the frame off with back-to-back hits before a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt by Thad Ector put both runners in scoring position. Zack Thompson delivered an RBI groundout before Ilgenfritz scored on a throwing error during the play. Allan Camarillo capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly to right.
Gardner-Webb finished the afternoon with 10 hits. Agosto led the way with two hits and two RBIs, while Camarillo added a pair of hits, including a double, while Daniel Smith delivered a pinch-hit RBI single.
The Runnin' Bulldogs added an insurance run in the ninth inning to push the lead to six on Smith's RBI before Stuart closed the door in the bottom half to complete the shutout. Gardner-Webb played clean defense behind him, committing no errors in the victory.
Gardner-Webb will look to sweep the Bulldogs as game the third and final game of the series will take place tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
